The Ministry of Higher Education did not respond to Al Jazeera\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The gates of several prominent universities were blocked by Taliban vehicles on Wednesday morning in an attempt to prevent women from entering campuses, several students told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>The ban came after women in Afghanistan had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/12\/7\/afghan-girls-sit-graduation-exams-despite-no-school-for-a-year\">taken university entrance tests<\/a>\u00a0in October.<\/p>\n<p>Girls have already been banned from high schools since the Taliban seized control of the country last year.<\/p>\n<p>Maryam, whose full name has been withheld to protect her identity, had spent the last two hours prior to the ban preparing for her exams scheduled in the coming days. She is in the last semester of a political science degree and had been determined to complete it despite the grim circumstances in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day I go to work, and then attend classes in the evenings, and study till late in the night, so I can achieve my dreams and serve my country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to send an essay to another university for a master\u2019s scholarship. But my arms and legs are numb. I can\u2019t write the words. I want to cry, but I can\u2019t cry. I still don\u2019t have any words to describe the pain I feel in my heart,\u201d said Sahar, a 22-year-old student of computer science, who requested her name be changed. She was in the last year of her course, and was hoping to apply for a master\u2019s degree in the same field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was looking for courses for further education, and was even considering foreign universities. Now, I feel like my future is no longer in my control,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I can\u2019t study, my life is meaningless. It has no value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Only last week, Sahar had celebrated her sister\u2019s graduation \u2013 a glimmer of hope and happiness in an otherwise grim year that saw two of her younger sisters banned from high school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe arranged a party for her, celebrated with our siblings, friends and mother and father who were so proud of us. But now, we are all in mourning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/omny.fm\/shows\/the-take\/the-taliban-backtracks-on-reopening-girls-schools\/embed\" width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Despite promising a softer stance on women\u2019s issues, the Taliban have imposed increasingly harsh restrictions on women\u2019s freedoms, rights and movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest, I am surprised they let the girls stay in universities for a whole year,\u201d Madina, a lecturer at a public university in Afghanistan who requested her name be changed, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy students are in tears, these kids had dreams and hopes that they held onto even during all the loss and crises of the last 16 months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Madina is old enough to recall the last time the Taliban seized power in the 1990s, and can relate to the trauma Afghan students are going through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lost many years of my education because of their ban last time they were in power. I continued learning in secret as many Afghan students do now, but it was a lot of hard work to pick up where we left off after the Taliban were gone. I wouldn\u2019t wish that fate on anyone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>International agencies and governments have spoken out strongly against the ban.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world must reject, as Afghans have, that this is about culture or religion,\u201d US Special Envoy Rina Amiri wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Afghan history, only the Taliban have enacted policies forbidding girls\u2019 education. In no Muslim-majority country, in no place in the world, are girls denied an education,\u201d she pointed out, urging the global community to take action against Taliban policies.<\/p>\n<p>UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk also termed the ban as \u201cunparalleled in the world\u201d, adding that it comes \u201con top of girls being barred from attending secondary school, just think of all the female doctors, lawyers and teachers who have been, and who will be, lost to the development of the country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The effect of Taliban policies was laid out in a recent report by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2021\/12\/1\/talibans-ban-on-women-in-the-workforce-can-cost-economy-1bn\">UN Development Programme<\/a>\u00a0(UNDP), which estimated that the exclusion of women from the economy could cost the country $1bn, or 5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).<\/p>\n<p>Since the takeover, women in Afghanistan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/12\/21\/timeline-taliban-crackdown-on-afghan-womens-education-rights\">have been prevented<\/a>\u00a0from participating in various sectors, marking a 21 percent drop in employment, according to the International Labour Organisation.<\/p>\n<p>With universities shut, those figures are expected to rise.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-vids\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player pause-controller\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d9byE8D7PzA?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;wmode=transparent&amp;enablejsapi=1\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It was long clear that the ban was coming, Madina said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur female students were being stopped by the Taliban several times over the clothes they wore or even the colour of the fabric. I had been instructed to dismiss students if they didn\u2019t follow the Taliban rules. Some of these restrictions we had to deal with were unbelievable,\u201d she said, adding she had herself been stopped several times for travelling to the university without a male guardian, or \u201cmahram\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am unmarried, my father died long ago, and the Taliban killed my brother, my only mahram, in an attack 18 years ago.\u00a0What am I supposed to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another professor, who only identified as Ahmad, added to Madina\u2019s views.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFemale students were facing lots of challenges since last one year. They had to wear long and black clothing, they were not allowed to enter a male professor\u2019s room or talk to a male professor outside of the class. They had to enter university only on specific days and times. They were not allowed to use smartphones, even for the purpose of photography,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven laughing loudly in the university wasn\u2019t allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Picking up on these red flags, Ahmad had pushed them to finish their work as quickly as possible and prioritised the assessment of his female students \u2013 all of whom will graduate, despite this ban.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the future of so many other women hangs in the balance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Afghan women are appealing to the Taliban to not politicise knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a Muslim woman, I am asking the Taliban for the right given to me in Islam,\u201d Maryam said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have to answer to the women of Afghanistan why they are doing this to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-source\" dir=\"ltr\">SOURCE:\u00a0AL JAZEERA<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018My heart is bleeding\u2019: Afghan women devastated by university ban The Taliban\u2019s decision to suspend women from accessing higher education has extinguished a rare source of hope for many.
